How to clean marble

Genuine Italian marble is one of the most durable and forgiving materials in the home. Caring for it is wonderfully simple — a soft cloth, clean water and a little attention keep your piece beautiful for decades.

Everyday cleaning

Marble asks for very little. Wipe the surface with a soft, damp cloth — that is all. Warm water alone removes dust and everyday marks.

Dry the piece afterwards with a second soft cloth. Marble that is dried after wiping keeps its polish and resists water spots.

Avoid abrasive sponges and scouring pads. They can dull the hand-polished finish over time.

What to avoid

Never use vinegar, lemon juice, bleach or any acidic cleaner on marble. Acid reacts with the stone and can leave a dull mark called etching.

Avoid generic bathroom or kitchen sprays unless they are marked safe for natural stone. When in doubt, plain water is always the right choice.

If something acidic touches the marble — a splash of juice or wine — wipe it away promptly rather than letting it sit.

Living with plants

Our planters are designed for indoor plants. We recommend keeping your plant in its nursery pot or a liner inside the marble vase, so soil and roots stay contained.

When you water, let excess water drain before placing the plant back inside. Standing water left for weeks can mark any natural stone.

If a faint ring ever appears where water has sat, it will usually lift with a damp cloth and a little patience.

Water marks and stains

Polished Carrara marble is finely crystallised and resists water marks well, but like all natural stone it rewards prompt wiping.

For a stubborn mark, use a cloth dampened with warm water and a drop of pH-neutral soap, then rinse with clean water and dry.

Deep stains are rare in normal use. If one occurs, a stone-care specialist can repolish the surface — marble can always be renewed.

The patina of time

Marble does not wear out — it wears in. Over the years the surface develops a soft patina, the quiet record of a life lived around it.

This gentle mellowing is part of the material's character and is one of the reasons marble has been chosen for beautiful objects for thousands of years.

Cared for simply, your piece will outlive trends, moves and generations.

Every CARRABEL planter is carved from solid Italian marble and finished by hand.
